Pufferfish Unveils Seabed Sculpture, Declines to Explain Its Meaning

After a week of round-the-clock work, a small pufferfish has completed a perfectly symmetrical sand circle the width of a double bed and has refused all requests for an interview.

A small speckled pufferfish hovers proudly above a large circular sand sculpture with rippled ridges radiating from its centre, while curious fish peer at it from a nearby rock.

A pufferfish no longer than a finger has unveiled a large circular sculpture on the sandy seabed just off a quiet island coast, and has firmly declined to say what it means. The work, roughly two metres across, consists of a flat central area surrounded by dozens of neat ridges and grooves radiating outwards like the spokes of a wheel. It appeared over the course of about a week. Nearby fish describe it as either a masterpiece or a great deal of fuss about sand.

The artist worked alone and without tools. Witnesses report that he swam in straight lines towards the centre, again and again, lying flat against the seabed and fluttering his fins so hard that the sand was pushed aside in tidy furrows. Several times a day he stopped to inspect the ridges from above and then went back to correct one that, as far as anybody could tell, was already perfect.

The finishing touches drew particular attention. In the last days, the pufferfish collected small fragments of seashell and placed them carefully along the ridges near the middle, a decision one passing crab described as bold. He also smoothed the central area into a fine, soft texture, quite unlike the rest of the seabed, and hovered over it for long periods without moving, which critics have interpreted as either pride or exhaustion.

Asked by a group of wrasse whether the sculpture represented the sun, the passage of time or a very large biscuit, the pufferfish said nothing and puffed up slightly, which is widely understood to mean the interview is over. A reef octopus who has lived in the area for two seasons said she did not see the point of it, and then spent the afternoon rearranging her own den with shells.

The sculpture received its most important visitor on Friday morning. A female pufferfish swam slowly around the edge, inspected the ridges and the shell decorations, and then settled into the soft centre. The artist has not commented on this either, but was seen doing a small, fast lap of the entire circle immediately afterwards.

Astonishingly, this is very close to real life. Divers off the coast of southern Japan spent years puzzling over mysterious geometric circles on the seabed before researchers discovered who was making them: small male pufferfish. A single male builds the circle, about two metres wide, by swimming and flapping his fins against the sand for around a week, carving ridges and valleys and sometimes decorating them with shell fragments.

The circle is a nest and an advertisement at the same time. Females visit and seem to choose males based on the quality of their work, and eggs are laid in the fine sand at the centre. The ridges may help by steering gentle water flow towards the middle, and the soft sand gives the eggs a safe place to settle. So the pufferfish is not being mysterious for the sake of it. He has just spent a week building one of the most elaborate proposals in the ocean, and there is really nothing more to say.
